Both are precious metals. They are not the same asset. Silver is an industrial commodity with monetary features; gold is a monetary instrument with industrial features. That distinction determines everything for the portfolio allocator.
The Volatility Delta.
Silver runs roughly 1.8x as volatile as gold on a 30-day basis. The gold-to-silver ratio has ranged from 30:1 to 120:1 over the past fifty years, averaging near 65:1. A silver allocation amplifies gold-like features while adding industrial-cycle exposure.
The Industrial-Demand Factor.
Roughly half of silver demand is industrial. photovoltaics, electronics, medical. Gold industrial demand is under 10%. Silver moves on industrial-cycle news in ways gold does not. The 2020, 2021 silver rally was driven largely by solar-panel demand forecasts, not monetary policy. Anyone buying silver purely as a monetary hedge is picking the wrong metal.
Portfolio Placement.
A reasonable precious-metals split is 70% gold, 30% silver. weighted toward gold's monetary-hedge role. Allocators bullish on industrial demand or silver-specific catalysts should tilt higher. Silver-dominant allocations for strictly monetary-hedge portfolios don't make sense.
Augusta Precious Metals.
For the $50,000+ allocator executing a Gold IRA rollover, Augusta is the custodian we recommend without reservation. The firm's contractual buy-back, named-analyst relationship, and segregated-default storage at Delaware Depository place it at the top of our register for the fourth consecutive cycle.
IRA Mechanics.
Gold and silver IRAs run on the same IRS framework. Approved silver includes the American Silver Eagle, Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, and specific bars from LBMA-approved refiners. Fee schedules at the top-six firms are essentially identical across gold and silver.
